The first thing Kate and Derek told me about their wedding was that it was a party. One side Scottish, the other French Canadian. Two families who knew how to have a good time. That’s what you will find in this Royal Botanical Gardens Burlington Wedding: two families excited for the newlyweds. Kate pulled me aside just after I started photographing, asking me to “find the moments” that day, referencing why she loved the photographs she saw of my work.
In a way, I only had to wait and observe the friends and families. It didn’t take long. My role as a wedding photographer is not to make things happen in a forced way. I have never tried. I only look to appreciate and document the fleeting moments that lie ahead. For Kate and Derek, you will see this in every corner of their wedding day: a moment with dad on-looking his wife and daughter, or Derek wiping away tears as Kate enters, the big smiles from both as they exchange rings, the quick champagne chug before the reception by the wedding party, and if you make it to the end, a bare-top belly dance by an uncle. At every corner, life unfurls itself.
