“Our story can fill the pages of many journals – it feels like we have been through it all.”
As written by Amanda:
“Jamie and I met in the school bus in Dubai when we were 13 years old. When he asked me out I was so nervous, I don’t know what he said because all I could hear was the sound of my heartbeat echoing loudly in my head. I said “Yes”. It has been 13 years since then – that’s half our lives – and we are finally getting married, in a city almost 7,000 miles from where our love story began. Our story can fill the pages of many journals – it feels like we have been through it all.
We grew up in the Middle East. Like all our friends, we knew we were going to go away to university – I had planned on going to the U.S.A, and he would head to Canada. We weren’t going to do long distance. Fate intervened and because of my PR status I ended up going to the same university in Toronto. It was difficult, but we graduated, found first jobs and settled down as young adults.
Jamie surprised me a few weeks ago when he led me to our old university residence (where we spent four years of our lives) under the guise of meeting some friends for a fancy dinner. He had a projector set up in the darkened lobby lounge. I pressed “play” and a video montage began. Old and new friends from Dubai, India, Australia, the U.K. and Canada had messages and stories for us. When the video ended, I was led by a friend (waiting in the shadows) to the top of the building where Jamie waited surrounded by candles, the CN Tower lighting up the night sky behind him. He got down on one knee and I was so emotional, I don’t know what he said because all I could hear was the sound of my heartbeat echoing loudly in my head.
It didn’t matter though, I said ‘Yes’ again.”
